Internet Safety

Many lively discussions have taken place recently regarding my lesson topic for my 4th through 6th graders.  I begin my lesson by asking the following questions?
1)  Do you have internet access at home? (most respond:  Yes)
2)  Where is the computer you use?   (family gathering spaces?, in personal bedroom?)
3)  How many of you have a Facebook or another social media account?
4)  How many of your parents or guardians have a Facebook account?
5)  Do they know your password or privacy settings?
6)  How many of you have been approached by a stranger on the internet?  (many students raised their hands).

The answers may or may not shock you but it will confirm that adults have to teach our children how to effectively and safely maneuver around the internet.

For the next month or so the students will learn about internet safety.
This includes learning to evaluate websites.  They will know how to look for clues to determine if a website is a valid website and could include meaningful and accurate information.

The kids will also learn about online security basics:
1. keep passwords secret.
2. protect recorded passwords.
3. don't provide passwords over emails or in response to an email request.

The kids will be advised to use social networking safely:
1.  communicate with people who are known to user.
2.  never meet anyone in person that they've communicated with online only.
3.  do NOT use full names or real names on sites.
4.  do NOT reveal the user's address or phone number
5.  do NOT reveal user's school
6.  be careful about the photos that are posted
7.  be careful about expressing emotions to strangers.
8.  recognize that cyperbullying is not okay and to report any cyberbullying to a trusted adult and continue
telling until the problem in resolved.

The students will also learn to search online resources efficiently.  There are many tips and advice to consider when one uses a search engine to gather information.
